Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer | REVIEW

When it comes to base makeup I am always looking for something that will provide me with decent enough coverage to mask my hyperpigmentation, acne scars and blemishes. Being someone with problematic skin, I am really fond of a full coverage base. Today I am sharing with you a very long, overdue review (I’m a poet and I know it). This review will be covering the Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer, a product that has become an integral part of my makeup arsenal.

Here is what Kevyn Aucoin claim about their must have, cult classic – The Sensual Skin Enhancer:

This versatile, waterproof face perfector covers, conceals and corrects. It hydrates and mimics the appearance of healthy, radiant skin with its ability to provide sheer-to-complete coverage. This award-winning, best-selling makeup is a go-to for pro artists, celebrities, beauty editors, bloggers, vloggers, and superfans everywhere!

Formulated with jojoba oil, honey, and minerals in order to hydrate and create the ultimate soft, dewy complexion. Transfer resistant. Long wearing. Sweat Proof. Perfect for all skin types.

The Sensual Skin Enhancer comes housed in a luxurious feeling, seemingly tiny, plastic pot. This pot contains 18g of Sensual Skin Enhancer for £38.00, a price that is quite eye-watering for a base product/concealer. However, I can honestly say after using it for a year and a half, it is completely worth it. Believe me when I say you only need a pin-sized amount.

Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer

The Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer is a multi-purpose product. With pigment that packs one hell of a punch, you can use this as a concealer or foundation. This product is very rich and creamy. It will cover literally anything. Heck, this stuff is so full coverage it will cover sins.

The Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer comes in a range of sixteen shades which is great, though could be improved in my opinion. These shades will cover majority of skin tones but not all. As usual with a lot of complexion products out there, there are a number of more shades for fair skin tones than there are for deeper skin tones. I think if they added a few more deeper shades to this range, I could declare the shade range as amazing.

It’s relevant to mention that the numbering system for these shades is not in a sequential order. The undertones vary significantly from one to another. Due to this I would highly recommend going into store and trying the shades if possible. If not, you can purchase samples from eBay here.

I purchased the shade SX11. Finding the right shade was really hard for me since I didn’t really want to risk wasting £38.00 guessing a suitable shade online without trying it first. However, I did find this blog post by Beauty Professor really helped me when looking online to match a shade to myself. From that blog post I did guess the shade SX11 would be the most suitable match for me but I still needed confirmation. The nearest Space NK store to me is actually quite far so I ended up making a trip to test out a few shades before deciding on SX11.

SX11 is a medium shade with Golden undertones. I believe the shade is a good match for me. In the last few months I have become a lot more pale so SX11 is a tad darker for me now but I can still make it work. It is the same shade as my foundation despite being a tad too dark to use as an under eye concealer (since I like to go lighter for my concealer anyway), so I mix it with a lighter liquid concealer for my under eyes.

The coverage on the Sensual Skin Enhancer is phenomenal. It is possibly the most pigmented base product you will ever encounter. I know it’s the most pigmented complexion product I have ever come across. I would describe the finish as satin. It’s neither too dewy or matte at all. When applying the Sensual Skin Enhancer you’ll notice it has a slight shine to it.

Now don’t be mistaken. If you’re someone who takes less than ten minutes to get ready, then this product will probably frustrate you. You have to take a little more time and effort to blend the Sensual Skin Enhancer because it’s so rich in consistency. This is no problem for me to be honest as I love the process of applying makeup. But for those who are more of a slap and dash kind of person, this product requires just a little more time to work with.

Since the Sensual Skin Enhancer is a multi-purpose product there are no shortage of uses for it. You can use it as a concealer, all-over foundation, highlighter or even a body foundation!

I would say the best way to apply this over blemishes, scars or hyperpigmentation is with a flat brush before blending it out with a makeup sponge or maybe even using your finger. For foundation or any other uses I feel a decent buffing brush would work very well. Again, if you plan on using a makeup sponge to blend it out I would definitely apply it with a brush first otherwise the makeup sponge may soak up a lot of the product.

If you want to use the Sensual Skin Enhancer as a foundation, I would recommend mixing it with another product since it doesn’t have much slip. Anything from a primer to a moisturiser or even illuminator for those in search of an airbrushed, dewy glow. You could even mix in a little with your foundation if you’re looking for full Photoshop coverage!

The formula of this product is extremely rich in pigment so it is quite thick and creamy. It doesn’t too heavy or overbearing on the face, you can just tell when you have applied it. I feel this product can work for almost anyone. I have combination skin (erring more on the oily side) and find it works extremely well for me. However, I do find when applying it on my chin (to cover a bothersome scar), it does wear off pretty easily after a few hours of wearing it. Albeit, due to my oily t-zone, my chin is always the first place any makeup starts wearing off. When I wear a primer, I notice it does last a little longer on my chin which is great.

As long as you don’t have extremely oily skin or flaky skin, I believe this product will work perfectly. I’ve noticed during a time where I once suffered through dry patches on my skin and used the Sensual Skin Enhancer, the dry patches were emphasised a lot. If you have oily skin I’d definitely recommend using the Sensual Skin Enhancer with a mattifying primer.

Note: The Sensual Skin Enhancer is formulated with jojoba oil so do bear that in mind if you’re in search for an oil-free base product.

Others have remarked that the Sensual Skin Enhancer does have a fragrant smell. Since I have no sense of smell at the moment, I asked my boyfriend to give it a whiff. He mentioned that it does have a light rubbery smell to it. Although it isn’t strong enough to be problematic for most people.

How I Use It

Considering the Sensual Skin Enhancer is so rich in texture, I don’t like using it around the eyes alone. I wouldn’t recommend applying it to the under eye area on its own especially if you have more mature skin as it enhances dry patches or any texture such as fine lines. The shade I have, SX11, is also a tad too dark to use under my eyes. This is why I mix it with a lighter liquid concealer to make it work for my dark circles.

I mix the Sensual Skin Enhancer with my Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in the shade 20 (review here!) and apply that to my under eyes with a flat concealer brush. To blend it out I use my favourite Beautyblender. I absolutely LOVE this concealer combination. Not only does it provide amazing coverage and make my dark circles virtually disappear, it lasts all day and doesn’t crease! The high coverage and creaminess of the Sensual Skin Enhancer mixed with the lighter liquidity of the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer are a match made in heaven for me.

Another way I use the Sensual Skin Enhancer is over my scars/blemishes that foundation hasn’t covered. I apply this again with a flat brush and blend out with a Beautyblender. You literally need a pin-sized amount to cover almost anything. Upon first trying the Sensual Skin Enhancer, my jaw dropped to the floor. I had applied it on a pesky scar at the time and it was undetectable. The coverage will seriously blow you away.

Here is a before and after featuring The Sensual Skin Enhancer by Kevyn Aucoin. I used it on my cheeks and chin to cover my scars. I also mixed it with the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in 20 under my eyes. What a difference it makes!

In Summary:

Although this is definitely the most expensive base product I have purchased, it is completely and utterly worth every penny. £38.00 for this tiny pot of magic is absolutely worth it. The amount of product needed for each application is so little that this small jar will easily last you more than a year. I have had my Sensual Skin Enhancer for a year and a half now and I still have half of the product left! The Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer is an amazing multi-purpose product that can give you a beautiful sheer coverage and natural finish. Or you can achieve a high coverage Photoshopped finish.

Although it’s not the cheapest base product by any means, (I mean £38.00 is a lot for a base product) I would recommend buying a sample of this from eBay to try it for yourself if you are interested yet hesitant about buying this product.

I am positively in love with the Sensual Skin Enhancer and use it every single day without fail. It is honestly my holy grail and I would recommend this to anyone struggling to cover scars, blemishes, hyperpigmentation…anything! I simply cannot imagine my makeup routine without it. One thing I know for sure is I am going to be repurchasing this product as long as I live.

Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer can be purchased for £38.00 from Beauty Bay, Cult Beauty or Space NK.
