Cream contouring has been around for a while now. One scroll through Instagram and you’re guaranteed to see a video of someone slapping on and blending a bit of cream contour. It seems contouring is a staple in everyone’s makeup routine now. It’s definitely a part of mine. In particular, I have been loving the Sleek Cream Contour Kit.
Sleek MakeUP are a lovely UK brand that specialise in contouring, at least I would say so. Their powder contour kit was the first contour kit I ever purchased and I’m pretty sure it was the only contour kit floating around high street beauty stores for a while. In April 2016 Sleek launched their very own cream contour kit amidst the hype of cream contouring. I purchased it when it first released and let me tell you… Since April 2016 I have never looked back.
Here is what Sleek claim about their cream contour kit:
The next generation of contouring has arrived! This palette contains two highlighting and four contouring ultra-blendable shades that work together to help you achieve a perfectly contoured complexion.
Sculpt, define and enhance to create the illusion of refined features, higher cheekbones, a softer jawline, or a slimmer nose.
The velvety smooth, buildable cream formulas blend seamlessly onto the skin for a flawless, fade-proof finish.
Expertly developed combination of shades that work with your skin tone to create natural shadows and highlights.
Out of all drugstore beauty brands I take quite a fancy to Sleek’s packaging. It’s simple and practical. It’s very…sleek (it really is). In Sleek’s Cream Contour Kit you get 12g of product housed in a sleek Black palette featuring a mirror, for £10.99. In the box you also get ‘the ultimate contouring guide’ which is brilliant for those who are beginners to cream contouring, or contouring in general.
There are six shades in total, two highlighting and ‘four contouring shades’. Arguably I wouldn’t say you can contour with the four shades they intended for contouring. From swatches you’ll see a few shades are very warm toned. Too warm to contour with in my opinion. I don’t see this as a disadvantage however, as there are multiple uses for this product.
I find the Sleek Cream Contour Kit provides a medium to buildable coverage with a satin finish. The finish of these creams are lovely as they’re not dewy nor matte. They provide a lovely natural finish to the skin which is perfect if you just want to wear the product on its own. This brings me to my next point.
Because this is a complexion product, there is no shortage of uses for this product. You could use these creams as foundation, concealer, corrector or for contouring. The beauty of a palette, eh? I’ve found with each shade of these palettes, there is a mixture of cool and warm undertones which is brilliant if you want to customise these creams to any of the uses mentioned above.
The shade range of these contour kits is fantastic, as always. You can purchase this cream contour kit in Light, Medium, Dark and Extra Dark. For my porcelain skinned beauties out there, not to worry. The contour shades in the Light Cream Contour Kit are very light. As a matter of fact, in general I tend to recommend going a shade deeper for contouring in these kits. Hence why I use the shade Dark instead of Medium. However, don’t feel you have to do this. I just prefer using the dark one as I prefer a darker contour. It still definitely looks natural though!
The formula of this product is fabulous. It’s neither greasy nor too thick, just the right amount of consistency. I find this ideal compared to other cream contour kits in the drugstore which I have found to be very oily and slippery to touch. The texture of this cream product is firm yet creamy. Writing this post I’ve come to realise I am terrible at describing product formulas (I’m sorry !). But trust me when I say the formula of these creams are amazing.
The creams are rich in texture and pigment, and also have a great amount of creaminess to them. Due to their creamy formula they blend so brilliantly, way better than the L.A. Girl Pro Conceal HD Concealer which is what I used to go for when cream contouring (review here). The longevity of this product is so incredibly impressive too. It lasts all day on me! These creams are definitely fade-proof for at least eight hours which is amazing.
How I Use The Sleek Cream Contour Kit
I’m somewhat ashamed to say I’m a serial cream contour enthusiast. Yes, I cream contour every time I put makeup on. What can I say? Ever since I crossed paths with the Sleek Cream Contour Kit I’ve fallen madly in love. I refuse to exclude it from my makeup routine!
When I’m cream contouring, I apply the shade 05 to my cheekbones, around my forehead and down the sides of my nose with my Real Techniques Foundation Brush. I use the one from the Core Collection Kit but you could use their separate Pointed Foundation Brush or just any old brush thin enough to paint some stripes on your face.
I then take my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush and begin to buff the product into the skin. The expert face brush is my favourite brush to use for blending in cream contour. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable blending brush! After blending the cream contour in with my expert face brush, I then take my Beauty Blender and bounce it over the areas I’ve applied and buffed in the cream contour. I do this just to make sure everything is seamless. This step is optional but I do this as I like everything to blend into each other to ensure a flawless finish.
After setting my face with powder I do go in with a touch of powder contour just to set the contoured areas and add a bit more definition back. After blending everything so well with the beauty blender a little definition gets lost. I like adding powder contour just to set the cream too and give it more staying power.
If I’m honest I never really use the top three shades for highlighting/concealing as I’m pretty content with my concealer combination at the moment (post coming soon!). Whenever I use this palette I always use the shade 05 as it’s just perfect for me.
So Louise, you’re telling us you’re in love with this palette for just one shade?
Yep. I’m not sorry for it either! As you’ll see, 05 is my most loved shade. It’s worth mentioning since I introduced myself to this cream contour kit I’ve since used up my favourite shade and I’m on my second kit now. When I use up all of 05 I do generally dabble in 04 and 06 to contour until I can’t take anymore and repurchase a new one. A girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do!
If you ever plan to use this with the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation (review here), definitely cream contour underneath the foundation! Or if you wear any foundation that dries super matte like Estee Lauder Double Wear for that matter, you’ll want to cream contour before your foundation. Speaking from experience, it’s impossible to blend any liquid or cream product once a foundation like that has set!
Does this product live up to its claims? 100%. The contouring creams are ultra-blendable and velvety smooth as stated. Fade-proof? Yes. Blends seamlessly? Definitely. I am in love with this cream contour kit by Sleek and have been for almost a year now. This cream contour kit has genuinely been a staple in my makeup routine ever since it was first released. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a high quality and affordable cream contour kit. Pair this with any highlighting palette by Sleek and you’ll be good to go honey!
