Katy Perry – This Is How We Do Makeup Look & Tutorial

Katy Perry released the music video to another catchy single about a week ago and I have only recently (2 days ago) seen it now.

If you haven’t watched it already, you can watch it here.

I have to say I can’t stop singing it at the moment. It’s so fetching and I love the way they directed the music video. Katy displayed a lot of different looks in that music video but there was one in particular that stood out to me.

Katy Perry - This Is How We Do

Katy wore this makeup look in two different scenes. It caught my eye as I’ve never really seen this makeup look on anyone before. It was so enticing I had to recreate it. I did a tutorial for you guys too!

Step 1: As visible I have already applied foundation, concealer and filled my eyebrows in before I started the eye makeup. I have also applied a generous amount of translucent powder under my eye to catch any eyeshadow fallout. This is called The Dropcloth Technique (I mentioned it in my last tutorial). What you want to do is apply eyeshadow primer all over the eye area, and then press a matte White eyeshadow all over your lid. You can use your fingers for this or a flat eyeshadow brush. Note: Pressing not swiping! We want to maximise the colour.

Step 2: Line your lid with a shimmery Pink eyeshadow using a flat eyeshadow brush. Remember, the key is to again press the eyeshadow against your lid.

Step 3: Taking the same brush, apply the same eyeshadow again over where you have already applied it, then proceed to wing it out. If it suits you, thicken the line of shadow a tad more too. Notice how the eyeshadow is more pigmented?

Step 4: Taking a matte Grey eyeshadow and a flat definer brush, create a line in the form of a semi-circle, starting from the inner corner of your eye. Make sure this line is just slightly above your natural crease line.

Step 5: Continue to wing out this line, above the Pink eyeshadow, following the direction and angle of that wing. This is a good guide to getting this look even!

Step 6: Taking a matte Black eyeshadow and the same flat definer brush, draw over the line/wing to define it. It is best to place the Black eyeshadow as close as you can to the bottom of the line, that way it is easier to smudge out the Grey afterwards. Then proceed smudging the line upwards so it is not as harsh. Note: When blending, it is always best to use a clean blending/eyeshadow brush to ensure a seamless finish.

Don’t worry if you make any mistakes with the lining process! I messed up a couple of times and went over it with the matte White eyeshadow.

Step 7:  Apply a Pink glitter liner over the Pink eyeshadow you created a wing with earlier. This not only maximises pigment but gives it that sparkly glaze you want for this look!

Step 8: Following that same wing line, take a Black liquid/gel liner (I strongly suggest liquid for this look, gel will most likely smudge the glitter) and line from the inner corner of your eye. Wing this out also, as close to the lash line as possible. We don’t want to cover that Pink prettiness! In this step I also went back and defined the Grey/Black line a little more. This is optional.

Step 9: My favourite part as always! PUT THAT MASCARA ON! But, before you do, take the same matte Grey eyeshadow and apply it carefully to your bottom lash line. Ahh. I feel much better now the mascara is on. It just always pulls the look together incredibly.

Katy Perry wears a very Rosey Pink blush with this look, and hot playful Pink lips to match. Unfortunately, the pale Pink blush I used didn’t show up very well on my not-so-pale skin! So I went ahead and applied a slightly darker blush. I also contoured a liiittle bit, as the look was very soft on me without it. Katy didn’t need the contouring for this look as she is already blessed with a well structured face!

Now, for the lips! As I don’t own any pink lipliners, it was slightly harder to capture Katy’s lovely lip colour. I first used a hot Pink lipstick as the base (the pigment slid off easily but there was still a noticeable stain on my lips), and applied a hot Pink lip laquer. This was a little too dark for the look, so I decided to apply the same shimmery Pink eyeshadow I used for the eyes, on the lips! Haha! Total rebel I know. I really liked the way it looked after doing this though. I think I made it possible considering I’m not blessed with a whole load of Pink lip products don’t you think? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
